Jessica Leonard’s sculpture Empowerment draws upon Greek mythology to address the unequal status of women in contemporary society. The artist has chosen to focus on Artemis, goddess of the hunt, wilderness, chastity and childbirth. Artemis is a courageous independent figure and this sculpture forms part of an ongoing series of works exploring female role models. During the physical process of making this work, the artist has carved into the canvas. The act of carving is important, both as a material manifestation of anger at the mistreatment of women throughout history, and as a means of achieving an emotional release.
