Through the process of drawing, Lauren Conway seeks to tease out a commonality between collective memories of being a participant within educational spaces and institutions. In Swamp Thing a repetitive, obsessive and intently regressive mode of image-making is used to painstakingly recreate the artist’s residual memories of spaces that are now renovated into obscurity and to re-enact the mindset of a second level pupil. Her practice more broadly opens up a space for further connections to be made beyond the institutional, extending across time and space by juxtaposing archival materials, documentation from site visits, and found images.
