Matthew Shiell

Roots #1-5
2021
Mixed media on wooden panel
Dimensions: Five works, various sizes (40cm x 50cm – 90cm x120cm)

Matthew Shiell’s painting series, Roots, investigates the confluence of traditional narratives (including ancient myths) and the interpreted, subconscious and experiential dwellings of nostalgia. In particular, what’s presented here began as a personal recollection of the artists’ time growing up on the coast of Portugal – although it can also be reminiscent of the origin of our species – and our growth as a community. Line is used as a gesture to encapsulate the visual form of the work; in tandem with large, geometric shapes. The line is the life within these boxed-in limitations; akin to performing on a stage.
