The Ephemeral Effect
2021
Mixed media (including ice, bubbles, petals, leaves, sand, digital photographs)
Dimensions: Variable

Pat Fitzsimons’ photographic series The Ephemeral Effect explores the concept of how things do not last, are ephemeral and transitionary; things that we cannot control. His work experiments with non-permanent materials, phenomena and processes such as ice, wind flows, river flows, fire, smoke, decay, defrosting and a burst of bubbles. Working with his ‘ephemeral art box’ of materials he documents the impermanent traces and transitory moments left behind. His DIY set-ups include mini freezers, lightboxes, halogen heaters, prisms, domestic basins, mirrors, petals, hooks, paper cones cups, plastic cups, long marking sticks and garden rakes.
